If you want to help asylum seekers and get some quality legal training we may have the ideal opportunity for you.

We are looking to recruit a limited number of volunteers based in the West Midlands with a special interest in asylum to be trained as immigration advisers specialising in asylum law and practice.

What is on offer?

You will be provided with training on the UK immigration system with a special focus on asylum.  The intention is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to pass the OISC Level 1 and Level 2 exams (protection only). There will be an opportunity to assist with casework conducted by Hope Projects which focuses on those who have been refused asylum and are facing destitution and/or homelessness.  This will be supervised and supported by members of the legal team at Hope Projects who are registered at OISC Level 3 with one-to-one mentoring from TACTIC.

What is your commitment?

We are seeking people who can commit to volunteering for the equivalent of one day a week for a period of 10 months.

Experience, knowledge and qualifications

The following are essential:

  • Commitment to the rights of people seeking asylum
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Previous experience in the asylum or immigration field or in another area of human rights

The following are desirable:

  • Personal experience of the asylum process in the UK
  • The ability to speak another language fluently
  • A degree in law or legal experience in the UK
  • Previous experience (paid or unpaid) in any capacity within the immigration or asylum field
